Fort Bing

Barbara created Fort Bing for the active toddlers attending Bing Nursery School.

Fort Bing is located at Bing Nursery School, a Laboratory School for Research and Teaching operated by Stanford University, one of the most prestigious universities in the country. As part of their play-based and child-centered preschool, they offer high quality experiences for young children and an opportunity for researchers and students to study child development.

The playhouse fort is part of the school playground that is designed for active two-year-olds. Like Barbara’s other playground structures for schools, Fort Bing is a custom design that was created to meet the unique needs of the client. This age group is seeking to challenge themselves physically, so incremental and safe climbing and sliding opportunities are key.

With that in mind, Barbara created a wooden play structure that incorporates a two-story fort with a gentle slide coming off of it. Because getting started on the slide independently can be tricky at this age, Barbara included triangular side “wings” for kids to push off from at the top of the sliding zone. The 3’ high deck area of the fort has custom railings that are decorated with circle-square-triangle cut-outs that match the logo of the school.

The inclusive playground design also includes an ADA Transfer system with 2 steps so that everyone can be included during play time. Below the deck, a crawl tube offers a different sensory experience and can also provide a moment of respite for children with autism or other challenges that may cause them to feel overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the school playground.

As an experienced play structure and treehouse builder, Barbara always keeps safety front of mind. For that reason, she placed the pickets on the lower part of the tower railing in such a way that teachers can see all the kids on the deck from any angle. Bolts are covered with decorative metal plates and wood is smooth with rounded corners so little fingers stay comfortable. Barbara is a certified Playground Safety Inspector and makes sure that the play structure not only meets all codes, but also plays well!
